The BASD Kellyn Lifestyle Medicine Program

A FOOD AS MEDICINE EXPERIENCE

"The first wealth is health."  -  Ralph Waldo Emerson
We are excited to announce a fabulous healthy lifestyle program starting in October 2023 for employees of the Bethlehem Area School District (BASD).    This is the third BASD Lifestyle Medicine Program with Kellyn.

If you are concerned about pre-diabetes, Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and/or heart disease, this “food as medicine” program may be what you are looking for.

Lifestyle change is not easy, but the understanding support from the experts at Kellyn will help you every step of the way.

The Kellyn Lifestyle Medicine Program for BASD staff is focused on optimizing the habits that lead to both a long lifespan and a long health span.  It is not a diet or a fad.  It is a supportive program that assists in shifting habits while also stimulating discussion and building relationships that help to maintain the healthy habits for the long term.

It is free to all staff but is limited to thirty (30) families (BASD staff and significant others) for this cohort.  Additional interested families will be automatically pre-registered for the next cohort.

An introductory overview meeting for all interested staff is scheduled for Tuesday, October 3rd, from 4:30 PM – 6:30 PM at the Ed Center. A delicious dinner will be provided for all participants, up to a maximum of 60 attendees. Please register for the Introductory session to assist with planning for enough food for all attendees.

The introductory session on October 3rd will also be the last night to register for the Lifestyle Medicine program, if there are seats still available. Feel free to reach out to the alumni from the original BASD Kellyn Lifestyle Medicine program to get their thoughts on the impact the program had on their lives.

REGISTRATION IS FULL FOR FALL 2023.  PLEASE CHECK BACK OFTEN FOR SPRING 2024.

Testimonials

  • "Excellent and very important!  I loved trying new foods and learning how to prepare them. Being held accountable was very helpful.  I have transitioned to a more plant-based lifestyle and have more energy and a happier attitude. I will recommend the program."
  • "I felt so wonderful on this program.  The people were wonderful and never, ever made us feel bad. Without Chef Amanda’s food and positivity, I probably would have quit.   Amanda always had an idea to help.  The Kellyn team never let us down, even through the COVID 19 pandemic.  They got us on Zoom meetings and were always there for us.  This program is a game-changer.  I am hoping that this program is offered again."
  • "Thank you all.  I love your easy-going mentality and your huge knowledge base that you shared with us. This is an essential program. It changed my diet and mindfulness. My mood and energy had positive changes! A big thank you!"
  • "Excellent program!  Everyone was available, encouraging, and non-judgmental.   I was very grateful for the recipes and awareness of healthier ways of cooking.  The program encouraged me to try new foods and to make a connection between what I eat and how I feel.  I really appreciated the tips of stress relievers."
  • "Continuing online when COVID hit was wonderful.  I have made changes to my diet and stress management.  The journey is just beginning.  Thank you for everything."

Post Six-Month Response
"I’m happy to report that we are doing well. I personally have really invested in many of the changes and new lifestyle, though not without its ups and downs. I have us observing at least 2 meatless days per week and we continue to avoid the processed foods and junk for the most part. For some reason chocolate keeps finding its way into my house! Holidays so far have been successful with incorporating healthier versions of our foods. Still haven’t figured out how to avoid or substitute butter in the traditional holiday recipes (kiffles, stollen and poppyseed roll), but I’m cutting the calories and making other subs where I can. I have lost another 10 lbs and am working toward my goal of another 20 by next July.  Some amazing progress with our son as well. He tried beets for the first-time and I got a “they’re not bad”. So, that is promising. He even asked me for spinach in his scrambled eggs one day. Can’t wait until we can all have a reunion again."

  • "I would recommend this program to anyone.  Chef Amanda’s meals were critical to me in realizing that plant-based meals were delicious.  The group support was great.  It was comforting to know that others were facing similar challenges.  I went 100% plant based and am loving it.  This journey is a starting point.  I keep thinking of small changes that I can consistently implement to change my life.  Thank you! Thank you! Thank You!"
  • "Chef Amanda’s meals were important to build my confidence and maintain my interest.  I did not seek to find recipes and I could talk directly to the Chef.  Would love to add actual cooking classes to this program.  Please keep the food for each session.  It is a great motivator."
  • "Thanks for your spirited encouragement in helping us improve our health!  You have a wonderful program and we wish you much success in the coming year."
  • "The program was an eye-opener. The group is fantastic. I really enjoyed the journey.  It was a life changer.  I am so grateful that I was a part of it.  Please continue this program, it is excellent."
  • "Excellent program.  I am eating more plant-based foods and have reduced meat consumption.  I have an increased energy level.  Instead of naps, I exercise.  This was an awesome program.  Meagan, Eric, Amanda, and Angelica were amazing through all of this."
